Experimental Media Soundscape: Editing

List of used tracks in my soundscape

Time for editing. I started the process by creating the base of the track. I got a recording I took of a kettle boiling then added a parametric EQ to it increasing the lower frequencies of the track to give it more weight and plant it in the back of the soundscape as I used it as a base to put all the other sounds on top of. I then listened through every track a few times and thought of what I could do with each, I then simply played around with different tracks in different places to see what I could come up with. My main problem with my recordings of my voice was that it was too low to have an etherial vibe. So almost all of the clips I used had a pitch shifter on them in order to give them that ghostly vibe without it being cheesy. The ones that didn't were stretched out and i switched them to verispeed on the properties panel. This stretches the pitch alongside the length of the clip. I used this to create a richer lower pitch rage in the soundscape at the beginning of the track and then repeated it at the end.

The main story of the piece follows the kettle boiling, so its a slow build throughout but at the end when you hear more of the bubbles I wanted the piece to get really cluttered and loud. I did this because I wanted it to reflect the inner turmoil of the home and how it can be a slow underlying build of stress and then it can all kind of explode out. At first that was the end of the track but I ended up extending it by 5 seconds as I wanted to add back in the click at the end of a kettle boiling because I want to add a more humbling end to the piece which is even if there is trouble in the home in the end it normally settles out again, or at least thats how its been in my own experiences. To enhance the bubbling climax of the pice I duplicated the bubbling section to give to give it more oomph. I then started layering different pieces of voice on top.

To fit the etherial feeling I wanted I used alot of fades and playing with the volume of the sounds to make more passing moments. If I had more time with the project I would have like to make more of a 360 soundscape but unfortunately I didn't. The main problem I faced during this editing process was a problem on adobes part. Audition sometimes can struggle with rendering the playback so while editing I often had gaps of silence where the program didnt render the playback. I tried to find a solution to the problem but I couldn't in the end. I feel like I worked around it well and still created a good soundscape.
